The N words was used as a deragotory word towards African Americans during the slavery period. it was a word that was used by whites as a way to opress the slaves. it was used often since it was basically the name that was given to all the black people. When Mark Taiwn wrote this book in 1885 he was was trying to make the book as realistic as he could and thats why i think thats the reason why he choosed to put the word in the book. Mark Taiwn was an intelligent man so he knew exacly what the n word ment but he still choosed to put it in his book. The book is written about a boy's advebtures during the slavery period period when people were used to saying that word very often.
some of the questions that i have is to help me get expand my reasoning on to why taiwn choosed to put the word in the book.
What so other people think that mwrk taiwn put this word in his book?
How can i expand my essay?

I think he put it in because that was the word that was used at the time. I think the word itself wasn’t the insult but rather it became an insult because of what people thought and believed about African Americans at that time. I think you could add how the impact of that word has affected people and changed over time.
ReplyDeletei agree that i think he put it in the book to make it seem as realistic as possible. He knew what it meant and did it anyways. i don't think he was trying to put them down just making it real. So i also think that's why he put this word in his book.
ReplyDeleteTo expand your essay you could maybe talk about the book a little more and about how people think its a really demeaning word and what you think about that.
i like how you start it out.
i do agree that the n-word was used to represent realism in 1885,,,because people were treated as slaves and they were called"niggers"which i think is disrespectful.i like the way you said that mark twain used the n-word to represent the years that the n-word was used.
ReplyDeleteyou should write about how african americans were classified as a lower class in our society and in that period of time...also why would mark put the n-word in that period of time when blacks were offended by the word....is he racist or his maintaining historical realism???
I totaly agree with you and some ways that you can expand your ideas is by talking about the diferences between of the words use during mark twains time and our own
ReplyDeleteI think he used the word to make the book more realistic because that is what African Americans were called back in 1885. I think you can also put how I would be unnecessary for the word to be used if he wrote the book today compared to when he wrote it back then.
ReplyDeleteIn my personal opinion I do agree with you that the word was used maybe to maintain the realism for such period of time, but also think WHY includ the word so many times??? I mean, come on we all Know that they where called like that because of the period of slavery and the skin color. You can continue your essay by giving examples in the book that shows the way the writer is using this word and also telling more about the story.
ReplyDeleteI like your idea about why he uses the word so often in the text, I think he used the word to really paint the picture for us what was it like for black people in that time period and to take us back how they felt, they were the ones hearing this all the time, and if we are not comfortable reading this how couldev they felt when they were called this to their face every single day..
ReplyDeleteYou have a good start on you thesis. I think the reason he used the "n" word is to relate the time the book was written and the story of the book itself and also I can see that he is also making a point where black people are not what the general population think they are. In other words, their perception about balck people are wrong and in this case, Huck's perception of Jim was also wrong and you can site that part from the book also.
ReplyDeleteI think that Mark Twain wanted to make this book as realistic as possible and thats why he used the N word as many times as he did. I think you bring up good points as well.
