essay #5

The "N-word" was suppose to add and maintain historical realism in the book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, well at least thats what i thought before i read the essay by Julius Lester. Lesture wrote an essay to go deaper in to controversy over race. Know i think that realism has nothing to do with book. The N-word is the most horrific word you can say to any african american today. it was ment to make a lot of pain and make them know that they were basically worthless. if the word was not put in the book to maintain realism then whats the real reason for it?
when i first read the this book i had seen nothing wrong with it and maybe it was because i was trying to enjoy it more than what i was trying to anylize it but lester opened up my eyes to the truth. for example according to Lester "The novel plays with black reality from the moment jim runs away and does not immediately seek freedom."(365) Jim is a run away slave who wants freedom so that one day he is able to comeback with money to buy his family and give them freedom as well. instead of running north like every other slave would, he instead travels south down the mississippi river. Yes, the river was some kind of protection to jim from being captured like many of you will argue and yes he and huck had plans to get the intersection where the the ohio river meets the mississippi river but why would they miss such and important exit. Jim's life and family dependend on it so their was no excuses for a run away slave to miss his freedom because death was right behing him. Lesture agrees with my point as he shows it in this quote "jim, having unknowingly passed the confluence of the ohio and the mississippi rivers, would continue down the river and go deeper and deeper into the heart of the slave country."(366)
Jim ran away with huck, who in a way was ensaved too by his drunken father and because of this he decides to run away as well. huck and jim meet each other at the island and without thinking it twice they decide to run away together. so a question comes into my mind, why didnt huck just returen jim? its not like he cared alot about him or any other salve as to show compacion towards him and he was even willing enough to put his life on the line to help a run away slave. for a white boy to do this specially when he is surrounded by hatred towards slaves is very odd but yet twain expects us to believe that a boy of 14 would give a helping hand to a slave wich at that time was seen as an animal.
twain had nothing realist in this book. like Lesture argues "we are know to believe that an old white lady would free a a black slave suspected of murdering a white child." the town people thought that jim was huck's killer since he decided to run away the same night that huck got killed. a lady like miss watson, who is seen as the person who cares the most about huck, would let his killer free? i dont think that is very real. in fact i belive that she would have him tortured jim then hunged him. if we think about it ms. watson she was old so that means that she grew up thinking that slaves could never be free their only perpouse in life was to serve the white.
this book is seen as one of america's best novel. not only because its full of contreversy but yet enough beacsue it makes the white readers feel like they are in power again, reaturning to that time when they tough that they were supperior and able to make the african american feel worthless. when the book ends they are yet back to reality where we are all equal.

the N-word was used in this book to maintain "Historical Realism", that is what i thought before i read Yester. Know i think that realism had nothing to do with this book. since the n-word was the most commond word used back in the days i thought that it was there so that we can get a first glance on how life was during slavery. Yester opened up my eyes to find clues in the book to show me that i was wrong. For example according to Yester "The novel plays with black reality from the moment jim runs away and does not immediately seek freedom," when jim escapes he doesnt run north right away like every other run away slave instead he travels south, down the mississippi river. many will argue that the reason why he traveled down trough the mississippi river was beacuse the river was some kind of protection as to getting caught and they would they would be able to travel to cairo and go to ohio but then why would they sleep as they would travel beacsue they missed the exit they were looking for and run away slave whos live depended on it would not have missed such an important exit.

many of us like making jokes but when the joy or prank goes to far thats when its starts getting in to a situation that no ones likes. a great example is that of cotati city councilman man who painted his face black and posted a picture of it on his blog. he expected evyone to fing it funny and amusing but the truth is that it may actually have done the total opposite. i was reading some of his responds i saw that many people where actually telling him that they support him but their was actually many who said that their town is know viewed as a racist town. the nnap actually told him that they were going to so eveything possible so that he is out of office an expreessed them selves that since they were african-americans they know what was racist and that the picture sowed racism. what i think is that all who are african-americans will find it racist while thoes of differnt color will find it funny. the reason why i say this is because we as humman beings tend to find everything racist of hatred when it comes to being something that has to do with our race but when we see that its asomething that has to so with a race thats not our then thats when we start to see the funny side of it.

Essay #4

The "N" word has been around for a long time. is was first used during the slavery period as a way to categorize and put down african americans who at that time where the salves. it is a word that is was ment to cause harm to every slave that heard it. Even though time has changed but the the meaning to the "N" word has stayed the same. A person like Mark Taiwn who was very educated knew the true meaning of this word but he still decided to put it his book The Adventures of Huckeberry Fin. the main reason why i think that he put it in the book was to show realism of how time was back in the days. Still even today i think that we hear the word as often as we used to hear it because when we listen to hip-pop or rap the word that cant be left out of the son is non other than the same word that was used by white people to keep them down but they still say it.
First of all realism is always important so why make a big deal about a book that is doing the same thing that movies are doing, trying to make everything be and look as real as it can be. mark taiwn wrote the N word beacasue he wanted it to be as realistic as he could and in my point of viw he made it possible. movie makers now in days spend a lot of money on special effects and that because they just like mark taiwn they want their movies to be as realistic as possible. there is no harm in that.
african-americans might be the ones who get offended the most when they have to read this book and have to pronounce the word that is ment to harm them the most rite. well if this word might hurt them so much then why are they the one saying all the time. in my point of view i wouldnt call anyone a "wet back" which is suppose to be derogatory word towards latinos specially mexican because i am showing that it is ok to say it. every time a new songs comes out writen by are sang by african-americans the word that has to be there well its non other thatn the "n" word. so how can they sing it and say it but they cant read it.
Reading the boook the adventures of huck finn is actually like being back in the days and every word in the book makes it possible.

The ***N*** Word

The N words was used as a deragotory word towards African Americans during the slavery period. it was a word that was used by whites as a way to opress the slaves. it was used often since it was basically the name that was given to all the black people. When Mark Taiwn wrote this book in 1885 he was was trying to make the book as realistic as he could and thats why i think thats the reason why he choosed to put the word in the book. Mark Taiwn was an intelligent man so he knew exacly what the n word ment but he still choosed to put it in his book. The book is written about a boy's advebtures during the slavery period period when people were used to saying that word very often.

some of the questions that i have is to help me get expand my reasoning on to why taiwn choosed to put the word in the book.
What so other people think that mwrk taiwn put this word in his book?
How can i expand my essay?

uniformes

The incident with the dallas police officer and the NFL player was shamefull and it trully showed how the police officers really react to any situation. like i mentioned in class police officers first put on their police unifornme then their human uniform and this happens more when they are young because they dont want people to be able to walk over them and they want to show that they are tuff. i think that if i was that police officer the least i could do is walk inside the hospital to see if the story was really true then i could of just either let them go or waited til they got out to continue the situation. but i think that just by getting a glimps of who the police officer was chacesing it gave him enough info to make him react the way he reacted becasue specially he lives in a community where the mojority of arrested happens to be color people the ur first reaction would be that their is another color person breaking the law. but how do we end this if thour mind always make the whole picture from just a pieces of it or at least it tries too.

the definition of the minstrel is that its a show where white american would paint their faces black and make a play about african americans making them look dum, stupid and people that made you laugh because of what they did. to me as i am reading the book in a way i think that jim is a minstrel and the reason why i say this is that even though i have not finished the book in the part where jim has a hair ball and he can supposably tell the future and the part where he says that he got abducted by witches and was taken to the devil well if any person would say that to us our first reaction would be to laugh and say in our minds that that person is crazy. so to me after reading this this parts in the book jim is being seen as a person who we can think that he is crazy or dumb and someone who is going to make us laugh later in the book. but maybe as i keep reading i will understand jim better and see if he is protraid as a real person or if he was just put in this book as a minstrel so keep us entertained.

Racisim?

even with a colored president their is still plenty of racismim out there and we can see it everywhere that go. For example when i walk into a store the first thing that i notices is that almost all of the employees eyes are on me or on other colored people, and to me thats racisim right there beacuse if they where to see me equel to them than why would they be keeping and eye out on me. More examples is when we hear the news about police brutality the only people who always end up hurt are black males or hispanics. the same happends with sexism its always going to be around but their are always ways to hide it for example over the spring break i had to do a project for econ and i came across a studying showing that females with the same education still get paid less than a male and their their excuse for it is tha females get pregnant so they loose their senority. to me rasism is always going to be around and thats because we never tackle the problems that started it all we do is make fun and jokes about it. racismim may be at a low level right know but that doesnt mean that it wont get back up.

Kids and teen obesity in the U.S. is growing at an alarming rate and if we dont do anything our kids and maybe even our self will end with many physical problems in the future. the messages that the ad is sending is very powerful because what it is basically saying that even someone who has a perfect body like barbie can end up being obese is they get stuck in front of a monitor doing nothing but eating. even someone who is unbeatable like superman no chance for obesity if he ends up in front of the tv. i dont think that ads like this put pressure on kids to be skinny i take it in a ways that makes me aware that i should go out and exercise. kids become more pressured when they see skinny, bone showing models on tv. to me this an ad that will help parents if they can read the message correctly because it uses to images that kids are use to seeing perfectly shaped. when i see this ad many thought come in to my mind but the most important is not let any more kid sit in front of a monitor and just eat we should help them by taking the kids in our families out to the parks.

Essay # 3

Through the years the media has grown in ways that we never imagine possible but with this growth so has the negative perception towards Latinos. Know in days we are perceived as first of all gang members, shoplifters, and people who come to this country with the purpose of taking jobs away from the rest the population. All this is made possible because of news taking more importance in what minority groups do badly instead of the good doing. Yes, I do admit that there are some Latinos who have done wrong things but its not only Latinos its whites and African American too, But I am still perceived as a Latino.
Now in days we basically have the news at our finger tips and that’s because we can just turn on the computer and their we have them. But back in the days we had to buy the news papers. The news papers often only reported what was going one closed to us but now we can find out what is happening on the other side of the world. What I have seen is that the media is publishing more articles that make Latinos be perceived as people who are always doing wrong. I have noticed that most of the times they add a lot more information that what is really true and that’s because they want to attract the people so that their sales revenue can go up.
The perception that people have towards Latinos isn’t always a good one. We are seen as bad people as people who every time they walk in to your store you should keep an eye on. This has happened to me many times, when I and some friends have walked into a store and the first thing we notice is that there is an employee always watching our every move. As soon as we grab something from the shelves to buy we get followed.
I have even grabbed the attention of cops too. I know that to them mostly all Latinos are gang member and as soon as you see them with a gang color in this case blue or red then you know what gang they belong too. But the truth is that I am not a gang member I am a person who dislikes that because all that you are doing is killing for stupid reasons. I do recall one time when my friends Manuel, Maria, Lucy and I got pulled over. The first question the cops asked us was do you guys belong to a gang? We all answered no and then we had to show them our I.D.s. when I showed him mine his first words where so you are a sureno and all because in my I.D. I am wearing a baby blue shirt. That got me so mad because when we got pulled over I was wearing a shirt that had red strips, so I went ahead and pointed that out to the officer.
Perception can be both ways good and bad. I think that people will always tend to lean toward the bad ones because those are the ones that we hear most often and it so happens that if we hear it many time we will start to think that it is true. I don’t want to be perceived as a person who is always up to doing no good, I want to be perceived as a person who fought in life to get to where he is.

Arguments presented by the media

arguments that are presented by the media are in some way stronger than if we were to see them in real life. first of all in the video that we watched where the two litle kids had very different life styles,it was a great argument presenting that we never really think about the real price of the goods that buy we only think about our happines and leave everything else to the side. but this video did a really good job of showing us was it wanted too. first of all when you have two oposite videos playing at the time like the ones showing right here it make your point even strongrer beacause you are actully showing what you really mean and the music that you play is the one responsible for setting the mood. after watching this video i came to realize of how great of a life that we have where work is a choice and its not forced where we are lucky enogh to go to school and know that we will have a bright future.

Televisions have been around for more than 40 years. First it was the black and white televisions, then came the color TVs, and now high definition TVs. When they first came out everyone thought that it was going to bring families closer together but it actually did the opposite. Now more than ever families have centered their lives around these time consuming electronics. Some parents even use them as a way of dealing with their kids because as they know that as soon as the TV goes on the noise will go down. So I strongly aagree that televisions have inteferede with family life and have kept families from interacting in meaningful ways.
Familes were used to playing board games, talking to one another during parties. That was the past and television is the future. I remember being in mexico and waiting every year for my familys party to come beacause it was a time when all my family got to actully spend time with each other. Now that I am older and live in a country where most of the familes have at least two tv that’s all changed. when we have a party there is always something good on tv that we cant miss and the talking has to be posponed. I used to enjoy parties when we actully got to talk and play but know tv is the special guest at every party.
Dinner was all about family time. It was the time when families would sit together and ask each other how theire day was. Communication was at its peak beacsue everyone would and it was a time when parents would tell their kids how proud they are about them. Know tv is the main course in the dinner. It seems like without tv its not a family dinner. The sad thing is that beacsue of this no one asks each other how their day went beacsue they might interupt a great program that its on duaring family dinner time.
Parents have used television as a way of keeping their children entertained but what they are really doing is enjoying the time that they have with out time. Know more than ever kids spend most of their time sitting down in front of the tv just doing nothing but eating and watching programs that in some cases some are very bad to them. In other words tv has become the free babysitter that is always around the house just incase the mom I need help with her own kids. I view this very bad because at least you should spend time with your family and not let something like a tv be the main thing in their life.
Tv can be a helpful tool, you can learn many things just by looking at TVs. But I think that we forgot what the real reason for these electronics to be invented. They were suppose to bring a family closer together not spread them apart like how it is doing right know. Its not bad watching tv but we should do it in a way that we still spend most of the time doing productive things with our families not wasting time in front of a television.

Freedom Rights

People from all over the world come to this country because they want to share the same rights that we have. in many countries around the world you can get killed just by what you say but not in this nation because we have the first amendment rights, right? well we may be able to say what we want but i believe that this right ends when we start violation other peoples rights. in the case of the Obama shirt i saw no way that it could violate anyones rights if the boy would of worn it to school and the same goes with the best friend shirt because if we think about it, it never said anything that would have another student feel bad because it never talked about obama's race. in case where the students would be wearing something that talked bad about a certain race then that should be banned.  the only times when our rights should be stopped or taken away is when we interfere with other peoples right but if we don't then our rights should be  protected.

My Song

many people enjoy listening to music because it helps them relax forget about their problems, others listen to songs because they can relate to them. in my case i do both, i listen to music just for fun and other times beacaue i can relate to the song that i am listening to. the one songs that i can relate to the most is "The message," By Dr. Dre beacuse it talks about loosing some who you care about a lot and in this world i think we have all lost a special person in our lifes. this song is basiclly saying that i am a person that misses his past away loved ones, who sometimes cannot understand why things happen in our lifes even though most of the time the first response anyone will give you is "it happens for a reason". but for once i would like to know the reason instead of the same all response. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeC2dbQkDUs
